How to Clean Venetian Blinds without Damaging Them

Man in overalls cleans PVC venetian blinds with microfibre cloth

Venetian blinds are a common choice for many Queensland households because of their versatility and longevity. With the right care, these window furnishings are easy to maintain and keep the bright Brisbane light out effectively when closed.

They are generally made out of PVC, aluminium or hardwood timber, and are characterised by a pulley system to lift and a cord to tilt.

Timber Venetian Blinds

Timber venetian blinds are often a great aesthetic choice for household decor. They provide for excellent privacy and are easy to clean. Find out how below:

Pull the blinds all the way down – use the pulley system to lower them all the way down to the sill

Close the blinds – pull the cords to close the blinds as much as possible. There will be some overlap but don’t worry – you can get that later

Clean using a glove or microfibre cloth – wipe each slat from one side to the other with a dry or very lightly wetted microfiber cloth. Use water, a mixture of water and vinegar, or a mixture of warm water and detergent. Use as little liquid as possible with timber slats.

Avoid abrasive or scouring cleaning materials as they likely to damage the blinds. Do not use soap or non-diluted detergents directly on the blinds.

Alternatively, you can use a small vacuum, feather duster, or dust glove to remove the dust that has collected. Move your cleaning equipment from the centre outward to both the left and right sides. This will ensure that you are not simply moving dust around the length of the blind.

  1. Reverse and repeat – tilt the blades so the other side of the blinds face you and repeat. This is where you should catch any remaining dust from the overlap.
  2. Air dry flat – Rotate the blades halfway so the blinds are parallel to the floor and allow them to air dry. Never use so much liquid to clean that your blinds are dripping and do not roll wet slats up.

PVC and Aluminium Venetian Blinds

The primary difference in cleaning is that you are free to use cleaning liquids with aluminium and PVC blinds. If general dusting is not enough as described above, you can do the following deep clean.

  1. Spray with cleaning liquid – window cleaners and all-purpose cleaners generally work well for this.
